Poker

The game of poker is played with poker chips. If you play in a club, you will need to supply these chips. White chips are the lowest value and are worth five cents, while reds are worth ten or twenty-five cents and two, four, or five reds. Usually, players “buy in” by buying chips, with each player buying in for the same amount. After a round, the player may raise or fold, and bet again.

Poker’s name probably originated from Frenchpoque and Germanpochen, though it is not clear whether the game’s roots lie with these games. It is said to be closely related to the Persian game of as nas. Perhaps the Persian sailors who helped the French settlers in New Orleans introduced the game to the French. Today, poker is considered to be a Renaissance game, sharing its origins with other games such as primero and the French brelan. The English variant of the latter, brag, is clearly a descendent of brelan, as it incorporates the concept of bluffing.
